Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu)

The tea ceremony is perhaps the ultimate expression of the Japanese spirit. Simplicity, calm action, compassion and hospitality, concentration and the appreciation of nature—all of these are expressed through the centuries—old ritual of preparing a bowl of whisked green tea for honored guests. To study Chanoyu is to know the sound of the water bubbling in the iron kettle (said to mirror the sound of wind in pine trees), the sharp and invigorating taste of the tea, the beauty of a treasured bamboo ladle, a single blossom arranged to suit the season, or a rough ceramic cup, and the silent joy of sharing with others. The samurai are known to have turned to practice of the tea ceremony as a refuge from the cares and stresses of a combative life. Today, this art offers the same peace and spiritual strength to its students.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, nothing excessively garish. Martial arts uniforms are fine. Sweats will work. Shorts should be avoided. Jewelry should be removed during practice. Excessive perfumes and colognes should be avoided. Socks are required.

Class fee: $60 per month. Includes all materials.

Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo)

Shodo, or the “Way of the Brush” is traditional calligraphy of Japanese and Chinese characters using brush and ink. To create a piece of calligraphy requires spontaneity and total commitment. The kiai (energy) of the artist is revealed in the color of the ink and the rhythm and spirit of the characters. Concentration and depth of spiritual insight may be expressed and seen through each stroke of the brush. Calligraphy practice thus becomes a useful tool in our Zen training, and as a fine art has the added benefit of developing qualities of refinement and sensitivity which balance and add depth to the student’s personality.

Students will learn the basics of brushwork and structure of Japanese characters, including formal (kaisho) and more cursive styles. Once the basics have been mastered, students begin using the works of calligraphy masters, past and present, as models. No prior experience is required, and all materials will be provided. With a little practice, students will be brushing formal pieces that they may take home.

Calligraphy is taught as part of our ongoing activities on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
